IBPS PO has an excellent career path, and advancement is based on merit. PO begins as a Scale I Officer (Assistant Manager) and progresses to Manager (Scale II Officer) after 3-4 years. Promotion is accomplished through a written exam and an interview. The time and process of promotion vary slightly from bank to bank, but all banks offer fast-track promotion opportunities. As a generalist, PO has the opportunity to work in a variety of areas such as operations, credit, foreign exchange, investment banking, risk, and audit. Banks conduct internal exams for postings in Investment Banking and foreign offices. A PO's career advancement is rapid. Depending on the bank's vacancies, one can expect to be promoted every 3-5 years. Manager (Scale II), Senior Manager (Scale III), Chief Manager (Scale IV), AGM (Scale V), DGM (Scale VI), and GM are the promotion levels (Scale VII). The Government of India then appoints the Executive Director and CMD (Chairman and Managing Director). Almost all bank EDs and CMDs began their careers as POs. A few selected individuals are also given the opportunity to become Deputy Governors (DG) in the RBI, as one of the four DG positions is reserved for a commercial banker. As a result, becoming a Bank PO is the best way to start a career in the banking industry.
